As the temperatures start to rise and our AC’s come back on, the summertime energy bill can come as a bit of a shock. So how can we keep our homes and our wallets cool this season? We’ve rounded up five ways to save energy at home this summer without getting too hot.
1. Switch to LED Lights
LED stands for light-emitting diodes. As they work, an electrical current passes through a microchip, illuminating tiny light sources to create visible light. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, LEDs generate little to no heat, requiring less energy and emitting more light. For more detail about how LEDs function, check out our dedicated blog post.
LEDs are up to 10 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. When you switch to LED lights, your bulbs will use 75% less energy and save you money at the same time. At Gantri, we are passionate about developing sustainable, premium lighting down to every detail. When it comes to light bulbs, we have chosen industry-leading LEDs for all our lights.
2. Turn off the power to save energy at home
We could all use some more time unplugged, when you turn off the power of various devices or shut things down, you end up saving a ton of energy at home. Computers, TVs, and other electronic devices generate heat and use power when they are running, so it’s important to turn them off when you’re not using them. Some devices continue to use power even when they are shut off, so consider using a power strip and switching it off when you don’t need them.
If you tend to forget to switch off those lights, try using a timer to allow your lights to shut off when you typically leave the house or head to bed.
3. Dim all the lights to conserve power
Not only does dimmable lighting help you create the mood you want in your space, it can also save you some energy. Gantri’s custom dimming switch gives you maximum control over the intensity of your light and provides a seamless experience. When paired with Gantri’s LED bulbs you can reduce energy consumption as you decrease the flow of electricity to your light.
This summer, keep things cool by dimming your lights to switch up the vibe and save a little energy when you need it.
4. Block sunlight from windows instead of turning on the AC
Instead of immediately cranking the AC this summer, block sunlight from windows by keeping your blinds or drapes drawn. Southern- and western-facing windows take in a lot of sunlight so investing in quality shade can make a huge difference in keeping your space cool. North-facing windows let in limited heat so you can still get your natural light fix in the summer
5. Choose task lighting in place of overhead lighting
While traditional overhead lights can quickly illuminate a room, they tend to waste a lot of energy and aren’t always necessary. Instead, prioritize task lighting in high touch areas in combination with natural light. If you’re low on space, try Palm Table Light on your desk or in a dim corner for a little extra illumination for working or reading at home. Then keep things soft and moody by lighting your entryway with Ember Wall Light. Being thoughtful and conservative about your summer lighting can go a long way when it comes to keeping your energy bill low.
